How to set up your monitor for the right color

The desire to see the image optimal in terms of brightness, sharpness, saturation and other parameters can be easily explained on the monitor screen, because eye comfort during work and getting aesthetic pleasure from contemplating a high-quality picture depend on this. Despite the presence of subjective factors, there are general universal recommendations on the quality of the monitor’s color rendering, especially relevant if you need to print any image.

What is color rendering and in what cases does it need to be adjusted

Color rendering is the influence of the color spectrum on visual perception. Proper screen calibration is necessary not only for domestic purposes, for eye comfort, it is also a professional necessity for designers, video monitors, photographers, printing workers and many others. Not only the quality of the intended print depends on this, but also the work on customer edits.

IMPORTANT! When adjusting the settings, keep in mind that they may depend on the lighting, as well as the type of matrix and video card.

There are three ways to configure it: using your own parameter setting tools (buttons directly on the monitor), standard operating system programs, and additionally installed applications.

The easiest way is the first, but it is also the most primitive, since there is no question of fine-tuning. For domestic use, the second method is enough, and for the professional one, the third one is required, and in some cases programs are bought or rented.

The main recommendations for screen calibration are:

  1. It is necessary to proceed no earlier than twenty minutes after switching on, since it takes time to warm up.
  2. Before starting, reset all factory settings. Such a function can be included in the program, and if it is not, you can install the wini2cddc utility. It is convenient because there is a free thirty-day version, however, more than once, it will not be needed, so it can be deleted immediately after use.
  3. You should also disable all available auto settings.

Easy calibration using Windows features

There is a standard program for this. To open it, you must follow the path "Settings-System-Screen-Advanced Screen Settings." Or just type “Monitor color calibration” in the search. This applies to the tenth version. In systems 7 and 8.1, the necessary function is located on the control panel, the item "Screen".

REFERENCE! Since this program is designed for ordinary users, all its settings are simple, intuitive and provided with tips, so special additional knowledge is not needed for this, you only need to follow the given operations.

Before starting, expand the window to full size and sit directly in front of the screen at the distance at which you usually work. The first step is to adjust the gamma by moving the slider. Your task is to adjust so that the points in the center of the circles merge with them in color.

Next, you have to adjust the brightness. It is impossible to do this in the program, for this it is necessary to find the "Power" item on the control panel and make changes to it. In this test, the suit should not merge with the shirt (settings are too low), and the cross in the background should not stand out significantly (too high).

After that, the contrast is adjusted by adjusting the monitor itself. With an ideal result, all the details on the shirt should be distinguishable.

And finally, the last is color balance. If all the strips are gray, then everything is in order, but if they have any other shade, adjust this by moving the sliders.

The last step is to save all changes. You can also compare the result with how the color correction was adjusted earlier.

Adjust monitor colors with RealColor

RealColor is an image that opens in full screen to verify the correct color rendering.

On horizontal and vertical stripes with a smooth gradient image there should not be clear lines and stripes, but on the rest the borders between the colors, on the contrary, should be clearly visible.

How to change the color of the screen using Adobe Gamma

This program is necessary for those who work in Photoshop, it is included with it and is used to adjust color reproduction. The most convenient way to work with it is to use the setup wizard.

Initially, brightness and contrast parameters are set.

The smallest square should be as close as possible in color to the black surrounding it, but at the same time not merge with it, and the frame should retain the lightest tone.

The next step is the RGB settings.

The preferred settings for the LCD monitor are 1.8, for a CRT - 2.2.

After that, the color temperature of the white point in Kelvin is set. If you use a computer mainly in daylight, the optimal parameters are 5500-6500 K. With warm electric light - 5000 K, with luminescent - 9300 K.

The last step is to save the settings.
