Chamfer on the laminate: what is it

The choice of flooring today is not an easy task when performing repairs or constructing a new building, since at present there are quite a lot of interesting options for laying such a coating. If you look into the past, there were only a few such options. It:

  • Wooden floor;
  • Parquet;
  • Linoleum.

In this case, as a rule, linoleum or a wooden floor from a natural board painted with floor paint was used.

But a lot has changed since then. When building a new house or repairing, as a rule, they hire a designer who is engaged in the design of the premises, including flooring. This is facilitated by a wide selection of diverse floor coverings, including laminate flooring.

Why are builders and apartment owners paying more and more attention to this coverage? This material has several advantages:

  • Relatively inexpensive;
  • Easy to style;
  • It has a wide palette of shades and great durability.

Important to remember,When choosing a flooring, you need to find a middle ground between price and quality. Laminate flooring provides many options that satisfy these conditions.

What is a chamfer on a laminate

Chamfer on the laminate: what is it, the photo you see above. For several years, since the laminate appeared on the market as a material for flooring, it did not stand in one place in its development, but constantly evolved. In the beginning, a laminate appeared, which in assembled form was a single floor covering, as a solid array.

Over time, a coating appeared that had a chamfer at the edges of the laminated panel. The first bevels were similar to the letter V and this type of coating was given the corresponding name. A little later, a coating with U-shaped edges appears. Let's look further at how to figure out such a wide variety of this class of flooring.

The first thing to decide on is priority. What the buyer will put at the forefront, the final choice of goods depends on that. So, if the buyer is constrained in his financial capabilities, then most likely he will choose a coating without chamfers and with minimal wear resistance. Moreover, even in this segment of the product there are quite a lot of the most diverse options, especially in the color scheme. With other priorities, especially when it comes to design, the choice may be completely different. Let's look at the difference between all of these options.

If we talk about differences in bevels, then first of all it is necessary to consider the technology of manufacturing the material. From a technological point of view, the V-shaped chamfer is much easier to remove. Therefore, such a difference in the cost of coatings. If we talk about aesthetic and design aspects, then, as you know, tastes are not debated. Let's look at the main differences between the panels.

U-shaped chamfer. This is the youngest type on the market. The main difference between this type is the shape of the chamfer, which is formed by extruding it on special equipment. Moreover, the higher the class of goods, the better the edges of the panels are made.

The main advantage is that the chamfers are also laminated and protected, like the main surface of the panel. Typically, these panels have high wear resistance and hold moisture well. Thanks to the chamfer, it seems that the floor is made of natural wood. Recently, quite a lot of laminate of this class made in China has appeared on the market. Unlike well-known European brands, it has a lower price, which attracts buyers, but also lower quality.

V-shaped chamfer. This type of chamfer is obtained by milling the edge of the panel. After that, the section is painted over with special paint. As in the previous case, the effect of a natural board is created. Depending on the manufacturer, the moisture resistance and wear resistance will be quite high, but over time, the paint is washed off or changes its color and spoils the appearance of the floor.

Laminate without chamfer. In addition to the fact that this type of coating has, as already mentioned above, a minimum price, it has no other advantages over its more expensive brothers. And there are a lot of shortcomings.

First of all, these are irregularities at the joints of the panels between each other, both longitudinal and transverse. Due to imperfections in the equipment, gaps appear at the joints. And over time, moisture gets into them, and the laminate swells, and then loses its appearance. The better and more expensive the laminate, the smaller these cracks, but they still exist. But the price compensates for all these shortcomings.

So, after analyzing the various types of laminates, it is impossible to come to an unambiguous conclusion which one is better. Since it is important to decide at what angle we will consider this issue. If you look from the side of wear resistance to a different kind of external influences, then, of course, a laminate with a bevel is much better. It can be put in better quality and it will look better, but the price sometimes solves everything.
