DIY plywood bed

The huge variety of beds presented in furniture stores is amazing, but often not very good quality is hidden behind an attractive appearance. When buying furniture, there is no certainty about its durability, unfortunately, since the number of factors affecting this parameter is large, and not every buyer knows about them. An alternative to expensive furniture of dubious quality is a do-it-yourself plywood bed, which anyone can do.

Preparation of a drawing, materials and tools for assembling a bed

The material used is affordable and easy to process. This allows you to easily give the furniture a smooth outline, round corners and cut decorative patterns. The initial stage - drawing up a drawing of the future bed with an indication of all sizes, places of fixtures and finishes. It is recommended that you adhere to the standard values of the mattress, which will save you from further searches for non-standard products.

The advantage of self-manufacturing is that furniture can be of any size. The drawing can be done both by yourself and you can find a suitable one from the many presented on the Internet. After he is in your hands, you need to stock up on the following materials:

  • high-quality boards with a thickness of more than 40 mm;
  • 3 plywood sheets with a thickness of 15 mm;
  • finished legs, but you can make them yourself from the timber.

As for the tool, you will need:

  • screwdriver and screws;
  • tape measure, pencil and ruler;
  • bolts, washers and nuts;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • sandpaper;
  • wood glue;
  • paint or varnish.

ATTENTION! It is better to buy acrylic paints and varnishes, since they are harmless and do not have solvents in their composition. A screwdriver and a jigsaw are not the cheapest tools, but you can not spend money and take them for the duration of the work from your friends.

DIY step-by-step plywood bed assembly

Plywood is preferred because of its high strength, wear resistance, ease of processing and smoothness. Its cost is also important - as a result, a bed will cost several times cheaper than a purchased one. Of course, it also has a drawback - low resistance to moisture, but in this case it does not matter. The entire manufacturing process consists of several stages:

  1. Wireframe. First of all, longitudinal ribs with a height of 150 mm are cut from 18 mm plywood. The length of the legs should be shorter by 36 mm than the mattress. To determine the amount of material, you need to take into account that two stiffeners and sidewalls alternate every 40 cm. The length of the transverse ribs is 5 mm longer than the mattress and there should be only 2 of them on the edges of the bed. Assembly is carried out end-to-end and fixed with self-tapping screws. They are twisted into pre-drilled holes of a slightly smaller diameter.
  2. Legs. They are made of timber, and they should not be long - it will be enough 20 cm. The length can be varied based on personal preferences - it can be either less or more than the specified value.
  3. Sidewalls and headboard. The sides are overhead elements on the longitudinal ribs of the product, the height of which should be sufficient to prevent the displacement of the mattress. Edges should be given special attention - carefully sanded and checked so that they are straight. Finished elements are screwed to the extreme longitudinal frame ribs, and then with long screws - to the transverse ones. The head should protrude 30-40 cm above the frame. The process of its manufacture and fixation is the same as that of the sidewalls.
  4. Flooring. For him, fragments are cut out of plywood, which in total are equal to the size of the frame, after which they are attached with self-tapping screws with a fixation step of 25 cm

ATTENTION! All elements cut from plywood must be carefully proliferated before assembly.

3the final step is to eliminate all irregularities and roughnesses with sandpaper and coating the structure with paint or varnish 2 times minimum. Throughout all stages, you should constantly monitor compliance with all the dimensions indicated in the drawing, especially if you have never before encountered such kind of work.

What are the nuances to consider

Making a bed of plywood with your own hands is a fascinating and interesting process, on the one hand, but requiring patience and some effort on the other. Lack of experience can affect the quality of some elements or their assembly, but to avoid this, it is enough to use the recommendations of specialists:

  • if there is no laminated coating on plywood sheets, apply paint or stain to them before starting work and allow to dry completely;
  • the headboard should not be made too high, because carelessly leaning, you can break it;
  • to hide the screw head, the hole should be slightly increased with a drill of a slightly larger diameter;
  • when fixing the pads, fasteners should be screwed symmetrically, since they will always be visible - for this it is recommended to pre-mark the screwing points with a pencil;
  • you can make the bed more stylish and appropriate to the design of the room by sheathing the headboard with a fabric or decorating it with foam rubber, covering it with decorative patterns;
  • rational use of free space under the berth is possible with roll-out linen drawers;
  • if the room is modest in size, then lifting mechanisms will save precious square meters.

This design is quite simple, but no one prohibits resizing at its discretion, which will add to the attractiveness of a self-made structure. Such furniture is guaranteed to be durable and reliable; it will serve you for more than one year.
